Jessi Collins, Media Consultant of the Washington County News, inquired about adopting a Gran to come love on at our home. She wanted to bring her three-year-old son, Maverick, with her on these visits to hopefully foster a relationship that would benefit her son and our elder. We wanted to find a resident that would be a good match for this family and the elder. Through stakeholder interviews and much thought, Elder Lena Long was selected.
On May 6, 2014, they met for the first time and it was absolutely beautiful. The plan is for Jessi and Maverick to visit and bring goodies from time to time. The National “Adopt a Grandparent” program is designed to bring generations closer. This program usually takes place in a child care setting. We are hopeful that other people in our community will grasp this concept and come Adopt a Gran at Washington Rehabilitative and Nursing Center.
